Colombia "The gateway to South America." Colombia sits in the northwestern part of the continent where south America connects with Central and North America. Colombia is also the 5th largest country in Latin America and is home to the world's second largest Spanish-speaking population.

History and Demographic Information
Colombia’s population is 49,588,357 and the people of columbia are tied back to their history through their experiences, history and family lineage acting as a thread to connect them to they’re people and past. They’re were significant pre-European civilization groups living in Columbia and these civilizations were the: Maya, Zapotec, Totonac, and Teotihuacán civilizations. These indigenous groups living in columbia at the time were persecuted and killed by the spanish(as the spanish began the conquest of Columbia in 1525) and their territory was taken over and became colombian territory. Although the spanish had taken control of the native pre-European civilizations (and of columbia), freedom was not won from the spanish (as Bogota became the capital of the Spanish vice-royalty of Nueva Granada) and columbia became an independent in 1819 when after attempts to become free finally succeeded and parts of columbia threw off Spanish jurisdiction in 1810, and full independence came after Spain’s defeat by revolutionary leader Simon bolivar.
